Welcoming king Mahabali in Germany...

Yeah it was Onam this Wednesday (2Sep2009)...

Little bunny asked me 'What's Onam Mama?'...i told her Mahabali's story and how the king visited his people on this day to see how prosperously they all lived...She asked 'Can we bake cookies as well?'...hmmm..well we could but instead i went ahead and showed bunny how a typical Ona sadya looks like..we had everything from Inji pulli (ginger tamarind chutney), manga curry (a fiery mix of raw mango and spices), paripu curry (lentil stew), sambar (vegetables cooked with lentils), avial (a wonderful melody of vegetables cooked in ground coconut), olan (pumpkins and beans cooked in coconut milk), kalan (raw bananas cooked with ground coconut), cabbage thoran (stir fried cabbage garnished with shredded coconut), payar thoran (long beans cooked and garnished with coconut), beetroot pachadi ( beetroot in a yoghurt gravy), cucumber kichdi (grated cucumber in a yoghurt based sauce)...all served on a banana leaf...an organic plate??

Some of our friends whose family roots are from Kerala also joined us to enjoy the sadya...

I also made hubby's fav dessert which was parippu pradhaman a pudding made out of lentils....wow that was a truly beautiful day and my hope is that little bunny will also cook all these tasty delicacies when she grows up....
